Every day, an average of 15 people are newly diagnosed with ALS — more than 5,600 people per year. Since the average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from the time of diagnosis, there is no time to waste to help those who already have the disease!
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes muscle weakness, paralysis, and ultimately, respiratory failure. ALS attacks certain cells in the brain and the spinal cord needed to keep our muscles moving. Early signs and symptoms of ALS include muscle cramps and twitching, weakness in the extremities and difficulty speaking or swallowing.
